Sky further angered BT by providing Sky Sports to TalkTalk's YouView offering on a wholesale basis.

The dispute is the latest in a bitter war of words between the two companies that erupted when BT announced its intention to launch a rival sports channel, which will show 38 live Premier League games each season.

BT upped the stakes in its battle with Sky in May by offering its sports channels for free to broadband customers, after shelling out £738m for Premier League rights over three years. Sky, which over two decades has become the home of live Premier League action, spent £2.3bn for 116 matches over the same period.

Both companies are keen for the impasse to be resolved before the new Premier League seasons starts in August. BT expects to hear back from Ofcom in July, although it is not clear whether the investigation will be concluded that quickly.

In a statement, BT accused Sky of behaving in an "unreasonable and discriminatory manner". It added: "This is because they have refused to provide Sky Sports 1 and 2 to BT on YouView on fair terms whilst providing them to other pay TV retailers such as TalkTalk. While we are continuing to try to resolve this through commercial negotiations, we have asked Ofcom to take urgent action against Sky in the meantime. These are of enormous value to both scholarly and popular understanding of our industrial and scientific heritage, and represent one of the few areas where there has been a concerted attempt to develop national museums outside London. The news of the threatened closure of institutions which preserve our industrial and cultural heritage is particularly ironic, given that it follows shortly on the heels of the prime minister announcing his strong backing for the creation of a London-based Margaret Thatcher Museum and Library, at a cost of £15m.
Peter Scott Professor of international business history, Henley Business School at the University of Reading
Etsuo ABE Meiji University in Tokyo
Alison Bancroft Queen Mary, University of London
Bernardo Batiz-Lazo Professor of business history and bank management, Bangor University
Mark Billings University of Exeter
Regina Lee Blaszczyk Professor of business history, University of Leeds
Alan Booth Professor of history, University of Exeter
David Boughey Associate professor & "ERT is shut, ERT is finished," said the official.

A live feed of ERT – whose journalists have continued broadcasting over the internet in defiance of orders – showed workers breaking into applause after the court ruling. ERT's symphony orchestra began a concert outside its headquarters, playing an old news jingle to cheering supporters. "I've been here seven nights and this is the first time I've seen people smile," said Eleni Hrona, an ERT reporter.

During talks with his allies Samaras offered to reopen a pared-down version of ERT under temporary management, reshuffle the cabinet and update the coalition's agreement to improve co-operation among parties, a government official said.

Pasok's Venizelos said Samaras had appeared to accept the option of a cabinet reshuffle and better co-ordination. The three political leaders would meet again on Wednesday to agree on how to implement the court ruling.

"ERT is not the only or the main issue," he said. "The main issue is that this government must operate as a government of real co-operation and not as a one-party government."

The threat of early elections that had shaken financial markets appeared to recede as talk shifted to the reshuffle. "No political leader said we must go to elections," another official said. "Elections weren't even discussed."

The coalition parties over the past week had fed fears of a hugely disruptive snap poll by refusing to compromise over an entity widely unloved until its shock overnight closure.

Aware his allies stand to lose heavily in any election, the conservative Samaras had refused to turn the "sinful" ERT back on, vowing to fight to modernise a country he says had become a "Jurassic Park" of inefficiency and corruption.

His coalition partners had previously rejected Samaras's offer of a limited restart of broadcasts.
Ratings agency Moody's said the fraying political consensus on ERT's closure and slippage on a troubled privatisation programme after Athens failed to sell off state natural gas firm DEPA were negative for Greece's lowly C credit rating. "Without a compromise among coalition partners, the risk of new elections will increase," the agency said.

A senior eurozone official voiced concern that Greece was hurtling back to its days of crisis and drama, given the slow pace of public sector reforms and privatisations. "It's kind of deja vu with Greece," the official said.

Opinion polls over the weekend showed a majority of Greeks opposed the shutdown, due rather to its abruptness – screens went black a few hours after the announcement, cutting off newscasters mid-sentence – than to the decision itself.

In Syntagma Square outside parliament thousands gathered to listen to radical left opposition leader Alexis Tsipras protest against the ERT shutdown and attack Samaras as a "great Napoleon of bailouts".

"But he didn't see, nor did he predict, the Waterloo that ERT workers and the great majority of people prepared for him," Tsipras told crowds of flag-waving supporters.

ERT

Greece

Europe

guardian.co.uk © 2013 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. With two great actors in Sir Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi it should be fantastic," Cryer writes in the latest Radio Times. "But it was insult, insult, insult every other line. You don't believe in them … it made John Inman look restrained."

Cryer, 78, whose credits include The Two Ronnies and The Morecambe & Wise Show, said Vicious was part of an era of "back-to-basic sitcoms" including Mrs Brown's Boys and The Wright Way which had forgotten the importance of "great characters trapped in a situation".

"It's a serious business writing comedy. You don't necessarily need funny lines all the time. The key is to create characters. Characters people can identify with. But right now we've gone back at least 30 years in terms of format," he added. "The great sitcom writers of the past didn't think jokes were remotely important."

Cryer said writers such as Ray Galton and Alan Simpson (Hancock's Half Hour, Steptoe and Son), Johnny Speight (Till Death Us Do Part) and Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais (Porridge) knew this instinctively and just wrote great characters. "It's straightforward stuff: character, character, character. You don't need jokes, you don't need funny lines. The humour will come because the secret to the truly funny sitcoms is simple – they are basically all about life."

Comedy

ITV channel

Television

Jason Deans

guardian.co.uk © 2013 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. On Wednesday it will be one year since the WikiLeaks founder walked into the embassy in Knightsbridge in an attempt to avoid extradition to Sweden to face sex assault and rape accusations, which he denies.

In August last year, Ecuador granted him political asylum but the British authorities have made clear that he will be arrested if he leaves the building.

Patino said Assange was in "good spirits" despite the "limitations of his accommodation".

He added: "I was able to say face to face to him, for the first time, that the government of Ecuador remains firmly committed to protecting his human rights and that we continue to seek cast-iron assurances to avoid any onward extradition to a third state.

"During the meeting we were able to speak about the increasing threats against the freedom of people to communicate and to know the truth, threats which come from certain states that have put all of humanity under suspicion."

Since Assange entered the embassy, the Metropolitan police have maintained a round-the-clock guard, which cost £3.3m up to March.

Patino has previously accused the British government of trampling on the human rights of the Australian national by refusing to allow him to travel to Ecuador. Assange said last year he expected to wait six months to a year for a deal that would allow him to leave the embassy. On Sunday he said: "I remain immensely grateful to the support Ricardo, President [Rafael] Correa and the people of Ecuador have shown me over the last year."

He fears answering the allegations in Sweden would make him vulnerable to onward extradition to the US to face potential charges relating to the WikiLeaks releases, fears dismissed by Swedish prosecutors.

Ecuador

Americas

Julian Assange

William Hague

WikiLeaks

Haroon Siddique

guardian.co.uk © 2013 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies. But some were puzzled by the press release, which said "Jim will work closely with Clive Edwards [previously 'executive editor and commissioning editor of TV current affairs'] who it was announced last month will become commissioner for UK current affairs with enhanced responsibilities, leading on the current affairs strategy with the channel controllers." Happily, this suggests those who feared Tony Hall's new broom might sweep away the overlapping managers, bureaucratic Beeb-speak and jobs that look suspiciously like non-jobs – were far too pessimistic. Why is Edwards described as having "enhanced responsibilities", staff insolently ask, when he will no longer be overseeing production of all the major daily and weekly current affairs programmes, including Panorama and Newsnight? And why will the BBC not tell Monkey who he reports to? The Lord Hall giveth and he taketh away.

✒ As it seems restricted to members capable of time-travel (Michael Grade?), box office bookings are likely to be poor for a Royal Television Society evening with ITV boss Adam Crozier, which is promoted with its supposed date – 27 April – in ill-advised giant script in a full-page ad on page 2 of the, er, June issue of Television magazine. "Bloody Television!", you can imagine puce-faced RTS grandees roaring after having the cock-up pointed out, followed by the instant realisation that – as it's the society's own journal – they might just as well yell "Bloody us!"

✒Perilous times for Channel 5's Ben Frow, following Brian Cox's Twitter threat that "if I ever have the misfortune to meet the fish head who commissioned this shit on C5 about the moon landings, I WILL punch them" – as Frow is director of programmes, recently repeating Did We Land On The Moon?, the conspiracy theory-airing documentary that caused the physicist's toys to hit the carpet, was down to him. He resembles a younger John Malkovich, Prof Cox, and has been known to wear a skirt.

✒At least Frow must be on good terms with C5 owner Richard Desmond, as the policy of picking up hit ideas that Channel 4 now finds a little distasteful (and contaminated by association with its ancien regime) is progressing nicely. After the snapping up of Big Brother, next week sees C5 debuting its take on the Big Fat Gypsy … phenomenon, and it's very happy – as C4, stung by criticism, no longer is – to depict the community unflatteringly. A "Travellers season", no less, kicks off even-handedly with Traveller Feuds, about "riots, shootings, stabbings and bombings involving Travellers". Helpfully too, of course, it chimes with one of Desmond's papers' obsessions.

✒ At the Telegraph, after the recent in-house tension that Monkey highlighted over a writer's hatchet job on Kate Winslet, women's editor Emma Barnett looks to be out on a limb over another issue. Last week's final glimpse of BBC2's suffragette sitcom Up the Women was heralded by a page-topping Barnett puff enthusing that it was "proof that feminism can be fun". This seemed not a view widely shared at the Torygraph, which didn't review that episode or the two before it (presumably on the well-bred basis that you must say nothing if you can't say anything nice), managing only one tiny, largely critical preview. And as for her likely view of the blond-loving broadsheet publishing more scantily-clad photos - eight, including the front page – of Edward Snowden's pole-dancing girlfriend than any other paper...

✒ Places are still available on a day-long course on writing for newspapers and magazines organised for its readers by the Oldie (priced at a very decent £175, given that tea, biscuits and lunch are included), hosted by urbane veterans Jeremy Lewis and Richard Ingrams. But the eye-popping element is a 90-minute workshop on reporting from John Sweeney, which promises to transform the lives of the lucky group of over-60s. Watch out for YouTube clips (and even, perhaps, Panoramas) in a few years' time of bands of doddery born-again hacks in trenchcoats who use Saga hols as cover for smuggling their way into countries with oppressive regimes – and when there shout at politicians, officials, cops and bigots at a volume only possible thanks to their training by the controversial, foghorn-voiced TV investigator.

✒ Monkey's quote of the week comes from top tech innovator Marc Andreessen, raving about a future when if you're without Google glasses, you'll be "cut off from the world": "I think people are going to feel, basically, naked and lonely, when they don't have this," he told CNBC.

✒ Runner-up: an endearingly tentative sign-off on Channel 4 News, anchored (with Jon Snow in Iran) by the taboo-busting distaff double-act of Cathy Newman and Jackie Long:

"Long: That's it from us. Two women on the programme and it's still on air. Who'd have thought it, eh?

Newman. Making history. Sort of. We think. Maybe. We've got to check that one out, anyway. Back tomorrow night."

BBC

Channel 5

Adam Crozier

Television industry

Monkey

guardian.co.uk © 2013 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
